The glossary below provides definitions and explanations for capacity building terms, deliverables, project goals, and services. The glossary is a resource to enhance understanding and facilitate effective communication throughout the project.

TERM  DEFINITION
Family Serving Organization (FSO) An organization that provides services to families and children, such as health, social, legal or economic services to family caregivers/parents and their children.
Tanoma Consulting  Tanoma Consulting is a capacity building provider contracted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to deliver comprehensive technical assistance support and resources tailored specifically for FSO grantees.
Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) uses grantmaking, policy change, and impact investing to address barriers to health and wellbeing. RWJF is the funding organization for Tanoma Consulting’s technical assistance and capacity building services. Tanoma’s capacity-building and technical assistance activities are aligned with RWJF’s commitment to ensuring that all parents and caregivers have the resources they need to promote thriving families, as communicated by RWJF.
Commitment to Economic Inclusion

 Tanoma is committed to:

  • responsible stewardship of resources to help the most vulnerable,
  • to treat everyone respectfully,
  • to cultivate diversity, inclusion and collaboration; and
  • use evidence to analyze how FSO grantees currently promote economic inclusion, as well as how FSO grantees may improve their practices and policies.
Onboarding The onboarding process, commencing in March 2024, will allow capacity building team leads to begin partnering coaches with FSOs. This will include conducting a structured orientation program.
Cycles of Support  Coaches will provide FSOs with three Cycles of Support. During each cycle coaches will provide FSOs with: (a) monthly communications and (b) a workshop that will respond to the FSO’s technical assistance needs.
In-person Convening  In October of 2024 (dates to be confirmed), FSOs, coaches and capacity building (CB) team leads will gather for an in-person convening. The convening will allow CB team leads and coaches to meet with FSOs to provide an updated report on the TA/CB.
Technical Assistance / Capacity Building Goals & Services
Technical Assistance (TA)

Community-based model of collaboration between FSOs and coaches to identify, interrogate and interrupt factors of economic inequity for families and children. Coaches will collaborate virtually with FSOs monthly. Coaches may ask the following asset-informed questions to learn and update FSO TA needs:

  • How is your FSO currently contributing to economic inclusion and equitable community conditions?
  • How is your FSO currently contributing to economic, health, social and legal systems? How can your FSO be more equitable and more accountable?
  • How is your FSO currently contributing to economic inclusion for family well-being?

Coaches will follow-up monthly with 1-2 hours of technical assistance suggestive guidance over email (e.g., sharing documents, videos, and other materials).

Coaches will conduct one FSO site visit to provide technical assistance, such as conducting interviews and observations. Results from the site visit may inform capacity building and annual convening activities. Note: Preparing for coach site visits may result in additional communications and collaborations for planning and logistics.

Capacity Building (CB)

Coaches will provide all FSOs with suggestive guidance on:

  • program activities,
  • how to navigate family and community engagement, and
  • how to advance policy and advocacy economic inclusion efforts.

Coaches will design and implement one capacity building workshop (60-90 minutes) for all FSOs. Coaches will work together with CB leads to maintain a resource repository where all capacity building workshops are available. Coaches will also contribute their unique expertise to share CB documents, videos, and other materials for all FSOs.
